Ithaca Fantastik

About

The Ithaca Fantastik festival is a ten day film, art, and music festival that takes place in early November in Ithaca, New York. The “fantastic” dwells in that unsettling terrain between the uncanny and the marvelous, a place where both supernatural and natural causes mix. So each year, our programmers carefully curate and review submissions to bring the most exciting and intriguing, mind-bending, beautiful, and flatout weird films from domestic and international filmmakers to our fans. We look for challenging new voices, inspiring visuals, thought-provoking subject matter, and—of course—films that are just fun as hell.

Initially founded as a three-day film festival in 2012, we’ve evolved, mutated, and grown a few new limbs… adding art shows with local and international creative minds, a concert series with Ithaca Underground, live Q&As with filmmakers and teams, and after parties where film talk and thoughtful debate go on late into the night.

And it’s all made possible thanks to an incredible, creative, dedicated team of local volunteers and the support of our sponsors.

Our Mission

Our mission is to bring the best of fantastic culture to Upstate NY by presenting a selection of the year’s most anticipated international films, community-organized concerts and diverse art exhibitions.

The cinema component of the Ithaca Fantastik festival is built around four primary axes of programming:

  • An international competition
  • A retrospective of classic films selected around an annually changing theme
  • Several off-competition series including a documentary showcase, midnight features and additional mini- series with unique focus
  • A Cinema Concert performed with an original live score commissioned specifically for the festival

We work to present a carefully curated selection of films ranging from genre-driven classics to pure vanguard and experimental cinema. We want our audience to indulge their love for sci-fi, fantasy, thrillers, cult-classics, horror, and the absurd all the while we provide opportunities to expand their horizons. In order to cultivate a rich aesthetic environment and conversation between the arts, IF also hosts one or more annual Fantastik Art Shows and partners with Ithaca Underground as they present their November concert series.

Our long-term mission is to make Ithaca a destination and cultural hub where artists and audiences come together from all backgrounds and abilities to create, grow, and inspire.
