A mother and son move to a beachfront summer home to find spiritual healing after an unexpected death in the family. Sam, just past toddler age, starts to experience some strange phenomena that his mother, Beth, can hardly deal with because of her own grief. What began as a seaside getaway proves to be something wholly different.

Seth Smith’s (Lowlife, 2012) second feature film has solidified his important Canadian voice in filmmaking. With his own unmistakable visual obsessions and themes, Smith creates with THE CRESCENT an eerie work of cinema dealing with memory, family and grief in ways rarely seen in today’s film landscape.

The real-life Aaron and Justin are back on the film scene! Their followup to their 2011 Ithaca Fantastik Audience Award-winner, THE ENDLESS is another successful effort from the duo, which is sure to blow people's minds.

Tini Tüllmann surprises with this fantastic tale about doubling and doppelgangers and the implications of identity. Her first feature film definitely puts Tüllmann on the map as a director to follow! When a botched late-night robbery at a Brazilian restaurant turns messy, the owner and staff’s inner demons suddenly arise and turn the rest of the night into a tense, deadly hostage situation. Both robbers and diners alike are tormented and interrogated as loyalties are tested in this tight, thrilling, and savage commentary on Brazilian culture and politics.

Gabriela Amaral tackles the revenge horror trope in an unexpected way, with subtle storytelling married to brutal visuals. This film doesn’t compromise. It’s bleak; it’s on point; it will take you hostage 10 minutes in and won’t release you until the credits starts rolling.

Adapted from the Icelandic book of the same name, I REMEMBER YOU will suck you into an atmospheric whodunit as only the Nordic can execute (think: Stieg Larsson). Exploring ghost-horror from a totally new perspective, and laced with subtle traces of noir, this film will frighten you...to death!

Les Affamés (“The Hungry”) is the story of a remote village in Quebec that is ravaged by zombies and the assorted survivors who have to band together in order face their new reality. A quiet, subtle take on the zombie genre, this film will first draw you in with a dream-like rhythm and then let bloody chaos quickly take the reins.

Aubert definitely anchors his zombie film in the Romero camp of social commentary, but whereas George the Master doesn’t skimp on gory entertainment, Aubert employs a light touch to reveal a more arthouse take, via a refreshing path. One of the Fantastik discoveries of this year’s lineup!

Haywood’s PIN CUSHION is her feature film debut and a home run in every possible way. Dealing with the hard topic of intergenerational bullying, it is one of the most touching and heart-crushing films we’ve seen this year. Inventive and surreal, this passion project from Germany combines action with religion, life with fiction, and angels with dentists.

Simple Norwegian farmhand Vidar lives a dull and oppressive life on his mother's farm—until, that is, Jesus Christ himself visits and turns Vidar into a vampire. Against a backdrop of dry and practical humor, Vidar attempts to simultaneously find himself and fit in with his new way of life, only to have his therapist confront him with fears he'd rather not face.

Berg’s low budget film is steeped in sarcasm, and definitely one of our favorite oddballs from this year’s IF! It’s erotic, disgusting, politically incorrect, and always crossing the line of what’s acceptable only to get back on track with its snappy and universal humour.
